KUCHING, 3 Feb - Premier Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, unveiled plans to measure Sarawak's Continental Shelf.
Highlighting Sarawak unique geological stability, distinct from regions within the ring of fire. He emphasized the potential for Carbon Utilization and Storage (CCUS), stating, "We have a place to capture and store carbon."
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Land and Survey (LANDAS) Summit 2024, Abang Johari stressed the significance of this endeavor as a new industry. He pointed out that developed countries, emitting carbon and contributing to global warming, could now offset their impact by storing carbon in Sarawak's stable geological formations.
Introducing a new law specific to Sarawak, the Premier outlined the framework for managing carbon emissions. "This is how we handle carbon for it to be stored by advanced nations that have impacted our environment," he stated.
Premier Abang Johari sees this initiative not only as an environmental necessity but also as an economic opportunity.
Charging developed nations for carbon storage in Sarawak's Continental Shelf could become a lucrative revenue stream for the region. Premier Abang Johari expressed optimism, saying, "This could make Sarawak prosperous."
Highlighting the pioneering nature of this move, he proudly declared, "Sarawak is the first country in Malaysia to have laws governing carbon management." The Premier urged everyone to recognize the connection between land use, cutting-edge technology, and innovation.
He commended the Land and Survey Sarawak team, affirming, "You are on the right track, utilizing data and innovating based on our information." Sarawak's bold step towards carbon management positions it as a leader in environmental stewardship and economic innovation.
